I write about food, history, and science, and often where these intersect.
I was born in Columbus, Ohio, live in San Francisco, and when I can, travel to places where people enjoy a good meal, regardless of whether there are eyeballs involved.
I’ve written about these sorts of things and more for publications including Lucky Peach (RIP), San Francisco Chronicle, California Sunday (RIP), Slate, The New York Times, and GQ. I’m also the co-author with Brandon Jew of Mister Jiu’s in Chinatown, a narrative cookbook about Brandon and his groundbreaking restaurant, and how San Francisco’s Chinatown changed the flavor of America.
My work earned a 2022 James Beard Award and is anthologized in Best Food Writing. I’m a former 11th Hour Food and Farming Journalism Fellow. I’m also an attorney.
